An excerpt from my current favorite book, The Flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey:

As he headed down the corridor, I thought of how much of my suffering–the gloomy church, the hotel managers, the odious jeweler, the meat paste–had been unnecessary. All I had had to do was knock.
